The Domino Effect of a Poor Running Gait

Running is often praised for its simplicity — lace up and go. But beneath the surface of every stride lies a complex interplay of biomechanics. Even a minor imbalance in your running form can set off a chain reaction, leading to issues that don’t just affect your performance — they put your health at risk.

When your body moves inefficiently — say from overstriding, heel striking too aggressively, or favoring one side due to muscle weakness — you’re placing uneven stress on your joints, ligaments, and muscles. This often leads to:

  • Shin Splints – Caused by repetitive stress on the shinbone and the connective tissues around it
  • Plantar Fasciitis – Inflammation of the thick band of tissue running along the bottom of your foot.
  • Runner’s Knee (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome) – Pain around or behind the kneecap, often due to poor tracking or alignment.
  • Stress Fractures – Tiny cracks in bones from repetitive force, often exacerbated by poor form or inappropriate footwear.
  • And many others, including Achilles tendinopathy, IT band syndrome, and hip or lower back pain.

Don’t Wait for Pain to Be Your First Warning Sign

A professional gait analysis by a Movement Specialist i.e a Biokineticist can:

  • Identify hidden movement inefficiencies
  • Prevent injuries before they start
  • Improve your overall performance
  • Guide you on the right shoes and strength work

You don’t have to be injured to benefit. Prevention starts with proper movement.

Whether you’re new to running or aiming for a PB, a gait assessment is a smart step toward pain-free, efficient running
