Respiratory Syncytial Virus

croup

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that affects the upper airways. Children, especially under the age of 5, are the most susceptible to develop complications in the form of bronchiolitis/croup from RSV
RSV peaks in winter and with the sudden cold front we've been experiencing, we are bound to see an increase in cases.
How do I know if my child has RSV: RSV, like Influenza or Covid-19 can only be confirmed with a nasal swab
When to visit the doctor: When your child has a barking cough or high pitched cough/cry
If they seem like they struggle to breathe
High fever
Not eating
Always consult your doctor if you are worried!
Commom Treatment options: Fluids, anti-pyretic (something for the fever), possible nebulising solution, suctioning the nasal cavities. You will NOT be prescribed an antibiotic if your doctor suspect your child has RSV
